There are many types of chessboards for almost any moment when we want to enjoy good chess; in this article we will review some of them, their general features, advantages and disadvantages of each one.

Magnetic ChessBoard

We will start with the first board, many of us have had one of these, either as a gift from our parents, or simply in some magical way there is always one at home, I am talking about the magnetic board, which is quite small and mobile, perfect for traveling, takes up little space and can be used almost anywhere, even upside down 🙃 thanks to its magnets.

Advantages

Vinyl ChessBoard

This board is usually seen more in organizations dedicated to chess, such as school workshops, chess clubs, neighborhood workshops, etc. These have a more standardized size; they are usually better for transporting in large quantities as they do not get damaged by rubbing.

Advantages

⦁  It is very easy to transport, they do not get damaged by putting one board on top of another, many can be transported at once.

⦁  It can be washed when it gets dirty.

⦁  It comes with a bag that makes it easy to transport without losing the pieces.

Disadvantages

⦁  Care must be taken not to scratch the board, you could break it. 

⦁  The pieces can break easily.

Pocket Chessboard

This board goes a little more unnoticed, it is not very famous, it is a small folding board that was not made to play, but to practice openings, solve problems, it was made to train while we are traveling. Thanks to smartphones where you can do this and much more, these boards are not very well known, although for those with more classical tastes it can be interesting to have one nearby.

⦁  Due to its size, it is easy to lose or forget.

⦁  Be careful with the pieces; due to its material, it is easy to be damaged.

DGT Board

This board is the one used in all professional tournaments, it has a technology that allows to automatically identify the moves of the pieces, it counts the number of moves and sends them directly to a software.

These boards are specially designed for special tournaments where you want to broadcast the games to the audience in the same tournament or online

DGT Board

Board dimensions = 25.2” inch x 25.2” inch x 1.97" inch

Square dimensions = 2.165” inch x 2.165" inch.

King dimensions = 3.75'' inch / 9.53 cm; King base = 1.7'' inch / 4.32 cm.

Weight = 28.4 ounces

Piece count = 34 (16 pieces per side, plus two queens for queening)

Advantages

⦁  It is possible to play on the most popular online chess platforms with the board as an e-board.

⦁  It can be connected to our computer via Bluetooth.

⦁  It comes with a variety of software to help its digital operation and for our training.

Disadvantages

⦁  It is quite expensive (there are versions with fewer functions at a lower price).

⦁  Be very careful with the electronic components inside the board (do not get wet or hit).

⦁  Due to its size and weight, it is not so easy to transport without a car.

Professional Wooden ChessBoard

The professional wooden board has all the dimensions of the DGT board, but without the technology. It is a good option to give a more professional look to competitions in clubs or institutions that cannot afford a DGT board, which is much more expensive.

⦁  They are very similar to the reality of professional tournaments.

Disadvantages

⦁  Be careful with the pieces, they can be stained by liquids or humidity.

⦁  Because of its size and weight, it is not so easy to transport without a car.

Handmade ChessBoard

There are as many handmade boards as there are craftsmen who make them, each one has its own unique features, these boards are made for display rather than play.

A handmade board in the living room or displayed in the central room of the chess club will undoubtedly attract attention and give a special touch to the place.
