In 2021 he disputed the world championship against Magnus Carlsen, where at the beginning he started solid, but after the first defeat where the Norwegian knew how to force him to make a mistake and exploited one of Ian's weak points which is his mentality after suffering a defeat. This caused Ian's performance to collapse and he lost the championship and Magnus successfully defended his title.
In 2022, he won the candidate where world-class players such as Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana and Ding Liren among others participated. By winning this super tournament he had the opportunity to conquer the world again, but this time not against Magnus (he resigned his title), but against Ding Liren.
In 2023, he faced Ding Liren in the world championship where a new champion would emerge and write his name in chess. This tournament is considered one of the most exciting of the last time thanks to the fact that at one point the Russian was leading by 2 points, but the Chinese managed to overcome this difference, a titanic task at this level.
The Chinese Ding Liren won in the fastest places where the one who sees more in the reduced time he has to think takes the victory, as it was in this case in favor of Ding.
